Carpenter Ant Treatment in Crockett & East Texas — Critter Gitters Pest Management
Carpenter ants are the second most destructive wood-destroying pest in East Texas after termites — and they are chronically underestimated. Homeowners who see large black ants on their kitchen counter or porch railing often assume it is a minor nuisance. If those ants are carpenter ants, there is a colony actively excavating the wood structure of their home.

I contacted Critter Gitters this morning to help me eradicate a huge wasp nest on the front of my house and around the eaves of my roof. They kindly came out a couple of hours later, killed all of the wasps, and sent me a picture of the nests. Now THAT’S service!!! Wouldn’t use anyone else!! Thanks Lane for your help and awesome service!

Joey Baker was highly recommended by the realtor who sold me my house. I saw what looked like termites, but Joey came right away and identified carpenter ants. I saved some dead ones in a zip lock bag for him to look at. He and his team treated the inside and outside of the house. It only took 2 treatments to get rid of the little critters. Don't do what I did. When they first started trailing out of the wall, I sprayed pesticide on them. Joey let me know to let them trail, otherwise they will go back in and make another colony.

Carpenter Ant Treatment in Crockett & East Texas — Critter Gitters Pest Management
Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it — hollowing out smooth galleries for nesting. They prefer wood that has already been softened by moisture damage: window frames, fascia boards, deck ledger boards, roof sheathing at ventilation gaps, and floor joists in crawl spaces with moisture problems. In East Texas, where moisture from rainfall and humidity is ever-present, carpenter ant habitat is abundant.
Critter Gitters provides professional carpenter ant treatment throughout Houston County under TPCL #13381. We locate and eliminate both the outdoor parent colony and all indoor satellite colonies — because treating only the interior provides temporary relief at best.

Carpenter Ants in East Texas — Why Houston County Has High Pressure
Several factors make Houston County particularly vulnerable to carpenter ant problems:
Pine forest proximity:
The Davy Crockett National Forest and surrounding managed timberland provide an enormous permanent reservoir of carpenter ant parent colonies in decaying stumps, fallen timber, and root masses. Forest-edge properties in Kennard and Grapeland experience the highest carpenter ant pressure — with super-colonies in forest debris extending satellite colonies directly into adjacent structures.
High rainfall and humidity:
Houston County's 45+ inches of annual rainfall creates widespread moisture-damaged wood in older structures — the primary harborage condition that draws carpenter ants from outdoor colonies into buildings. Window frames, fascia, and crawl space joists are the most vulnerable.
Older housing stock:
Crockett's historic district and older residential neighbourhoods throughout the county contain structures with decades of weathering, inadequate moisture management, and numerous points of moisture-damaged wood that are highly attractive to nesting carpenter ants.
Carpenter Ant vs. Termite — Key Differences
Both carpenter ants and termites are serious wood-destroying pests, but they are fundamentally different and require completely different treatment:
Carpenter ants: Smooth, clean galleries in wood. Coarse sawdust (frass) mixed with insect parts pushed out of galleries. Ant bodies visible. No mud tubes. May be heard as faint rustling inside walls.
Termites: Rough galleries filled with mud and faecal material. Mud tubes on foundation walls and surfaces. Winged swarmers (reproductives) in spring. No visible ant-like insects — workers avoid light entirely.
If you see large black ants (12–20mm), particularly in spring near windows or in the kitchen — and especially if you find piles of coarse sawdust near wood structures — those are carpenter ants. Contact us for identification and inspection.
Our Carpenter Ant Treatment Protocol
Step 1 — Inspection: We conduct a thorough interior and exterior inspection, identifying all active gallery areas, moisture-damaged wood, and satellite colony locations inside the structure. We also identify the most likely outdoor parent colony location — decaying stumps, root masses, or wood debris adjacent to the structure.
Step 2 — Parent Colony Treatment: We treat the outdoor parent colony location with a non-repellent residual product. Without eliminating the parent colony, indoor satellite colonies will be replenished continuously from outside.
Step 3 — Satellite Colony Treatment: Interior satellite colonies are treated with direct injection of non-repellent product into wall voids and gallery areas, plus targeted bait placement. We use products that worker ants carry back and share with nesting ants — achieving deep colony penetration.
Step 4 — Exterior Perimeter: Non-repellent liquid treatment applied to the full exterior foundation perimeter to intercept foraging workers and prevent new satellite colony establishment.
Step 5 — Moisture Assessment: We identify and report all moisture conditions that are attracting carpenter ants — roof leaks, plumbing drips, inadequate crawl space ventilation, wood-to-soil contact. Addressing moisture is essential for preventing re-infestation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carpenter Ant Treatment in East Texas
Q: I see big black ants every spring. Is this a carpenter ant problem?
A: Spring is when carpenter ant reproductives (winged swarmers) emerge from established colonies. If you consistently see large ants near windows, in your kitchen, or on your porch every spring — and particularly if you have noticed sawdust-like material near wood structures — you likely have an active carpenter ant colony in or near your home. We will inspect and confirm.
Q: Are carpenter ants as bad as termites?
A: Carpenter ants cause less damage per year than a well-established termite colony, but they are still serious. A long-established carpenter ant super-colony can hollow out significant structural wood. The damage is also more visible than termite damage — finding it earlier is possible with a thorough inspection.
Q: I treated with over-the-counter products and the ants keep coming back. Why?
A: Most over-the-counter products are repellent — they drive carpenter ants away from the treated area but do not reach the parent or satellite colony. Without eliminating the colony itself, foragers continue to emerge. Non-repellent professional products are essential for carpenter ant control.
Q: Do carpenter ants bite?
A: Yes. Carpenter ants have powerful mandibles and can inflict a painful bite, particularly when the colony is disturbed. They also spray formic acid into the bite wound, adding to the irritation. This is not medically serious for most people but is unpleasant.
Q: How long does carpenter ant treatment take to work?
A: Non-repellent treatments work in 2–4 weeks as the product transfers through the colony. Visible interior ant activity typically declines within 1–2 weeks of treatment.
