Fire Ant Control in East Texas Lawns & Yards
Fire ants are more than annoying — they’re painful, aggressive, and they ruin your ability to enjoy your own yard.
Kids can’t play outside without risking stings. You can’t mow without getting attacked. They build mounds everywhere and spread fast. And if you’ve tried the home remedies — boiling water, gasoline, grits, club soda — you already know none of that works.

I contacted Critter Gitters this morning to help me eradicate a huge wasp nest on the front of my house and around the eaves of my roof. They kindly came out a couple of hours later, killed all of the wasps, and sent me a picture of the nests. Now THAT’S service!!! Wouldn’t use anyone else!! Thanks Lane for your help and awesome service!

Joey Baker was highly recommended by the realtor who sold me my house. I saw what looked like termites, but Joey came right away and identified carpenter ants. I saved some dead ones in a zip lock bag for him to look at. He and his team treated the inside and outside of the house. It only took 2 treatments to get rid of the little critters. Don't do what I did. When they first started trailing out of the wall, I sprayed pesticide on them. Joey let me know to let them trail, otherwise they will go back in and make another colony.

Get Rid of Fire Ants and Reclaim Your Yard
Fire ants need professional treatment. The right product, applied the right way, across the whole yard. That’s what actually works.
Why Fire Ants Are Such a Problem Around Here
Fire ants love East Texas. Warm climate, plenty of moisture, soft soil — it’s perfect for them.
Here’s what makes them so hard to control: a single colony can contain 80,000 to 250,000 workers. They spread in two ways — budding, where part of the colony breaks off and forms a new mound nearby, and swarming, where winged reproductives fly out and start entirely new colonies. Mature colonies can produce thousands of swarmers with multiple mating flights between spring and fall.
Kill one mound today and you can have three more pop up next week if you’re not treating the whole yard properly.
How Fire Ant Stings Work (And Why They Hurt So Much)
Fire ants don’t bite — they sting, injecting venom through a stinger. Unlike bees, they can sting multiple times.
The venom causes an immediate burning sensation — hence the name — followed by painful, itchy pustules that develop within 24 hours. Don’t pop them; it increases infection risk and slows healing.
For most people it’s just painful and miserable. But some people have severe allergic reactions — swelling beyond the sting site, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness, rapid heartbeat. That’s a medical emergency. People with known bee or wasp allergies are more likely to react to fire ant venom.
Even without allergies, disturbing a mound triggers a mass attack. Multiple simultaneous stings can cause nausea, dizziness, and chest pain. Kids, elderly people, and pets are especially vulnerable.
If you get stung:
- Move away from the mound immediately and brush ants off your skin — don’t crush them, it releases alarm pheromones that attract more ants
- Wash the sting area with soap and water
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
- Watch for signs of allergic reaction — seek emergency care immediately if they occur
- Don’t pop the white pustules that form within 24 hours
Our Fire Ant Treatment Approach
Why Mound Treatment Doesn’t Work
Treating individual mounds — pouring liquid insecticide in, dumping boiling water, applying dust — is one of the most common and least effective approaches. It kills workers in that mound but the queen is located much deeper underground. She survives and rebuilds.
You’re treating symptoms, not the problem.
Keep Pets Safe Indoors During Fire Ant Treatment
We apply a professional-grade non-repellent granule across your entire lawn — not just the visible mounds. When watered in, the product binds to the soil and stays active. Fire ants can’t detect it, so they move through the treated zone normally. Workers pick up the treatment through contact as they travel and forage, carry it back to the colony, and transfer it to nestmates including the queen. The colony collapses from the inside.
This also protects against swarmers — new queens flying in from neighboring properties land, try to establish a colony, and contact the treatment before they can get started.
One application. Guaranteed for one full year.
Coverage: Fire ant treatment covers up to 20,000 square feet on our Premium and Elite Plans — a typical residential lot. Larger properties are quoted separately.
What to Expect After Treatment
First 30 Days
The treatment needs to be activated by water — rain or irrigation — before it becomes fully effective. Once activated, you’ll see activity slow down progressively over several weeks as the product works through the colonies. You may see new small mounds pop up briefly during this period. This is normal and expected — these are colonies that were just starting and weren’t visible yet. They’ll die off as they contact the treatment. Existing mounds will collapse as the colonies are eliminated.
Long-Term
This is one of our most effective services. I became a believer when working for Disney — it’s the best fire ant treatment on the market and the results speak for themselves. Most customers see elimination of active mounds within 3–4 weeks of activation. Because fire ants are constantly moving in from neighboring properties, fields, and ditches, the goal isn’t permanent elimination — it’s keeping your yard protected so they can’t establish colonies. One treatment holds for a full year.
Why You Can’t Eliminate Fire Ants Permanently
Unless every property around you is also treating, reinvasion is inevitable. Fire ants spread through mating flights, colony budding, and flooding — they’re constantly moving into new territory.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every fire ant in East Texas. It’s to keep your yard protected so they can’t gain a foothold on your property. One annual treatment does that.
Fire Ant Treatment and Your Pets
Keep pets inside during application and until the granules have been watered in and the area is dry — usually a few hours. Once absorbed into the soil, the treatment is safe for pets and people. The products we use break down naturally in the environment.
Common Fire Ant Myths (That Don’t Work)
Boiling Water
Might kill some workers in that specific mound. Doesn’t reach the queen, who’s deep underground. Mound is back up in days.
Gasoline or Bleach
Kills your grass, contaminates the soil, and doesn’t eliminate the colony. Also illegal in most areas.
Grits or Instant Rice
Complete myth. Fire ants don’t eat solid food — they consume liquids. Grits just sit there.
Moving the Mound to Your Neighbor’s Yard
Doesn’t work because you’re not moving the whole colony. Also, don’t do this.
Club Soda
Another myth. Doesn’t harm fire ants at all.
Save yourself the wasted time and money. Professional treatment actually works.
What’s Included in Your Plan
Premium and Elite Plans include broadcast fire ant treatment across your lawn (up to 20,000 sq ft) with your annual service.
Essential Plan customers — if you’ve got fire ants, we can add treatment as a standalone service. One application, one-year guarantee.
Preventing Fire Ants (As Much As Possible)
You can’t prevent them entirely, but a few things reduce pressure:
- Keep your lawn mowed — fire ants prefer areas with some vegetation but not thick turf
- Address moisture issues — they’re attracted to water sources, especially during droughts
- Don’t leave pet food outside — reduces their food sources
- Start proactive treatment before mounds appear — much easier than treating an established infestation
Fire Ant Treatment Across Our Service Areas
Whether you’re in Crockett, Grapeland, Palestine, Huntsville, Conroe, or anywhere else we service, fire ants are a problem. Rural properties with acreage see heavy pressure. Suburban neighborhoods have them too — they thrive in lawns, playgrounds, and parks.
We’ve been treating fire ants across East Texas since 2006. We know what works in different soil types and conditions.
When to Start Fire Ant Treatment
Fire ants are active year-round in East Texas, but most active in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. You’ll see more mounds after rain as colonies expand rapidly.
Start at the first sign of mounds. Better yet, start proactive treatment before they become a problem — it’s much easier to prevent establishment than to eliminate an infestation.
