Lawn Fertilization & Weed Control in Crockett & East Texas — Critter Gitters
A healthy, dense lawn is one of the best long-term pest control investments a Houston County homeowner can make. Dense turf crowds out fire ant establishment, reduces the resting habitat available to fleas and ticks, and eliminates the weedy ground cover where many pest species shelter and forage. A lawn weakened by nutrient deficiency, drought stress, or unchecked weeds is an open invitation to pest pressure from multiple species simultaneously.

I contacted Critter Gitters this morning to help me eradicate a huge wasp nest on the front of my house and around the eaves of my roof. They kindly came out a couple of hours later, killed all of the wasps, and sent me a picture of the nests. Now THAT’S service!!! Wouldn’t use anyone else!! Thanks Lane for your help and awesome service!

Joey Baker was highly recommended by the realtor who sold me my house. I saw what looked like termites, but Joey came right away and identified carpenter ants. I saved some dead ones in a zip lock bag for him to look at. He and his team treated the inside and outside of the house. It only took 2 treatments to get rid of the little critters. Don't do what I did. When they first started trailing out of the wall, I sprayed pesticide on them. Joey let me know to let them trail, otherwise they will go back in and make another colony.

East Texas Lawns Require a Different Approach
Houston County’s acidic sandy loam soils, high summer heat, and unpredictable rainfall create lawn care challenges that national franchise programs aren’t designed for. Fertilizer programs calibrated for the Dallas–Fort Worth prairie or coastal Bermuda grass perform poorly on the Centipede and St. Augustine lawns common in Crockett and surrounding communities.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension on East Texas lawn care provides the soil science behind why: our region’s soils are naturally low in nitrogen and phosphorus but can rapidly accumulate iron deficiency. An off-the-shelf fertilizer program often over-applies nitrogen (causing flush growth that stresses grass) while missing micronutrient deficiencies. Our blog on Bermuda vs. St. Augustine and Centipede grass care in East Texas covers the specific care differences for each grass type.
Our Lawn Program: Fertilization, Weed Control & Pest Integration
Our program is built around a seasonal soil-appropriate fertilization schedule, pre-emergent weed control applied before weed germination windows, and post-emergent broadleaf and grassy weed control as needed. We don’t use the same product every visit — treatments are adjusted for what’s actually happening with your turf.
Weed control on East Texas turf is licensed under the Texas pesticide application regulations overseen by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Professional-grade herbicides available to licensed applicators are significantly more effective than retail products — and applied at correct rates by someone who knows the difference between Bermuda and St. Augustine tolerance.
Our lawn program integrates naturally with fire ant broadcast treatment — we treat both in the same visit on properties enrolled in a bundled lawn and pest program. Healthy, dense turf is also a natural deterrent to fire ant mounding, so the fertilization work directly supports pest management.
Properties with significant outdoor pest pressure beyond fire ants can add mosquito barrier treatment to create a comprehensive outdoor protection program. We schedule all three services on the same visit where possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What type of grass is best for Crockett, TX?
A: Centipede grass is the most common and typically the best-performing turf in Houston County due to its tolerance for acidic soils and lower fertility needs. St. Augustine performs well in shaded areas. Bermuda is best for full-sun, high-traffic areas. We’ll assess your existing turf and give you honest advice about your best options.
Q: When should I start fertilizing in East Texas?
A: First fertilization typically goes down in late March–early April after the last frost risk has passed. Pre-emergent weed control goes down in February to stop crabgrass and other summer annuals before they germinate. Our seasonal program handles all of this on schedule.
Q: Why is my St. Augustine grass yellowing?
A: Yellowing St. Augustine in East Texas is most commonly iron deficiency (common in our acidic soils), chinch bug damage (which looks like drought stress), or improper mowing height. We diagnose before we treat — iron application on a nitrogen-deficient lawn, or vice versa, makes the problem worse.
Q: Are your weed control products safe for my pets?
A: Yes, when applied correctly. We use products registered for turf application and follow label re-entry intervals — typically 24–48 hours for pets, or after the product dries. We’ll walk you through specifics at each visit.
Q: Can you help with grub control?
A: Yes. White grubs (the larvae of June beetles and other scarabs) are a significant problem in East Texas lawns — especially St. Augustine and Bermuda. We offer preventative grub treatment in May–June before eggs hatch, and curative treatment for active grub damage.
