I contacted Critter Gitters this morning to help me eradicate a huge wasp nest on the front of my house and around the eaves of my roof. They kindly came out a couple of hours later, killed all of the wasps, and sent me a picture of the nests. Now THAT’S service!!! Wouldn’t use anyone else!! Thanks Lane for your help and awesome service!

Joey Baker was highly recommended by the realtor who sold me my house. I saw what looked like termites, but Joey came right away and identified carpenter ants. I saved some dead ones in a zip lock bag for him to look at. He and his team treated the inside and outside of the house. It only took 2 treatments to get rid of the little critters. Don't do what I did. When they first started trailing out of the wall, I sprayed pesticide on them. Joey let me know to let them trail, otherwise they will go back in and make another colony.

Why Fleas and Ticks Are a Big Deal Around Here
East Texas is ideal territory for both — warm weather, humidity, heavy vegetation, and plenty of wildlife moving through yards and neighborhoods carrying them around.
Ticks carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and other serious illnesses. They hang out in tall grass, wooded areas, and brush, waiting for a host to walk by. Dogs and cats pick them up outside and bring them inside. Or they hitch a ride on you after yard work or a walk in the woods.
Fleas reproduce at an almost unbelievable rate. One female can lay 50 eggs a day. Those eggs fall off your pet and land in the carpet, furniture, and bedding. Within weeks you’ve got hundreds or thousands of fleas throughout your house in different life stages.
Here’s what most people don’t know: the adult fleas you see are only about 5% of the total population. Eggs make up 50%, larvae 35%, and pupae 10%. Since 95% of the population is in immature stages in the environment — protected from most insecticides — vacuuming and insect growth regulators are critical factors in successful treatment. Killing the adults you see barely makes a dent.
And they bite humans too, not just pets.
Flea and Tick Treatment for Your Yard
Most flea and tick problems start outside. Treating the yard reduces the population before it ever gets inside.
We treat lawns, shrubs, ground cover, around decks and patios — anywhere fleas and ticks actually live. Focus goes on shaded areas, tall grass, brush, and along fence lines where wildlife travel. Treatment knocks down adult fleas and ticks on contact and provides residual protection for several weeks.
How often depends on your situation. For active infestations, we may treat every 2–3 weeks initially. For maintenance, monthly treatments during peak season (spring through fall) keep populations under control. Properties with heavy woods, lots of wildlife, or stray cats nearby will need more frequent attention than a small suburban lawn.
Flea Treatment Inside Your Home
If fleas have already infested your house, outdoor treatment alone won’t fix it. You need indoor treatment too.
We treat carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, baseboards, and pet bedding areas — anywhere fleas and their eggs are hiding. We use products that kill adult fleas and contain insect growth regulators (IGRs) that stop larvae from developing into adults. This breaks the life cycle. Without it, you’re just killing the 5% you can see and the other 95% keeps hatching.
Before we treat indoors, you need to:
- Have your pets treated with vet-recommended flea medication before our visit — no over-the-counter products, they’re not effective enough
- Mow the lawn before yard treatment — shorter grass means better product penetration
- Vacuum thoroughly everywhere, then immediately throw the vacuum bag away in an outside trash can — vacuuming is one of the most important things you can do and it stimulates eggs to hatch so they contact the treatment
- Wash all pet bedding and any linens that touch the floor
- Remove pets and people during treatment — you can return once everything’s dry, usually a few hours
- Continue vacuuming daily for at least two weeks after treatment — this keeps stimulating pupae to emerge and contact the product
Why You’ll Still See Fleas After Treatment (And Why That’s Normal)
The flea life cycle runs about 21 days. Here’s the part that catches people off guard: flea pupae are protected inside a cocoon that no insecticide can penetrate. They can stay in that cocoon for weeks or even months, waiting for the right conditions — warmth, vibration, CO2 from a passing host.
After treatment, vibrations from vacuuming and foot traffic stimulate them to hatch. They emerge, contact the treatment, and die. So seeing fleas for 2–3 weeks after treatment doesn’t mean it didn’t work — it means it’s working exactly as it should.
If you’re still seeing significant flea activity after three weeks and you’ve been vacuuming regularly and keeping pets on vet-prescribed medication, call us. We’ll come back and retreat. We’ll also check for a secondary source — wildlife under the house, a rodent problem, or a neighbor’s untreated pets reintroducing fleas.
Can you get fleas without having pets? Yes. Fleas can enter through rodents, wildlife moving through your yard, or even on your clothing. If you recently moved into a home with a prior pet history, dormant flea eggs and pupae in the carpet can hatch weeks or months later — long after the previous owners and their pets are gone.
Treating Your Pets — We Can’t Do That Part
We treat your house and yard. Your vet treats your pets.
Make sure your dog or cat is on a vet-prescribed flea and tick preventative. If they’re not, they’ll keep bringing fleas and ticks back inside after every treatment we do. It doesn’t matter how thorough the yard and indoor treatment is — an untreated pet undoes it.
This is a team effort: we handle the environment, you handle the pets.
Tick Prevention and Treatment
Tick treatment focuses on the yard — that’s where they live and wait for hosts. We can’t eliminate every tick, especially if you’ve got woods or fields nearby, but we can dramatically reduce the population around your house and in the areas your family uses.
A few things that help between treatments:
- Keep grass mowed short — ticks don’t like open, sunny areas
- Clear brush and leaf litter — ticks love hiding in that stuff
- Create a barrier of wood chips or gravel between your lawn and wooded areas
- Keep pets on vet-approved tick prevention year-round
- Check yourself and your kids after being outside, especially after hiking or playing in tall grass
When to Start Treatment
Fleas and ticks are active spring through fall — roughly March through November in East Texas. Peak season is late spring and summer when it’s hot and humid.
If you’re already seeing fleas or ticks, start treatment immediately. If you want to be proactive, early spring before populations explode is the right time. Waiting until you have a full infestation makes it harder and more expensive to resolve.
Flea and Tick Control Across Our Service Areas
Whether you’re in Crockett, Palestine, Huntsville, Conroe, or near Lake Livingston, fleas and ticks are active during the warm months. Properties near woods or with heavy wildlife activity see more ticks. Areas with stray cats or high rodent populations see more fleas. We adjust our approach based on what you’re actually dealing with at your specific property.
Keeping Fleas and Ticks Away Long-Term
Once we’ve knocked them down, maintenance is what keeps them from coming back:
- Continue monthly yard treatments during flea and tick season
- Keep pets on preventative medication year-round
- Maintain your yard — short grass, clear brush, reduce wildlife attractants
- Vacuum regularly and wash pet bedding frequently
Prevention is way easier and cheaper than dealing with a full-blown infestation.
