Lawn Fertilization & Weed Control in Crockett & East Texas — Critter Gitters

A healthy, dense lawn is one of the best long-term pest control investments a Houston County homeowner can make. Dense turf crowds out fire ant establishment, reduces the resting habitat available to fleas and ticks, and eliminates the weedy ground cover where many pest species shelter and forage. A lawn weakened by nutrient deficiency, drought stress, or unchecked weeds is an open invitation to pest pressure from multiple species simultaneously.

East Texas Lawn Grass Species & Their Specific Needs

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine is the dominant residential lawn grass in Houston County's established neighbourhoods — particularly in Crockett, Lovelady, and Latexo. It is a warm-season grass that thrives in East Texas's heat and humidity but requires consistent nitrogen fertilization during the growing season and targeted broadleaf weed control. It is highly sensitive to over-application of certain herbicides, making professional treatment important.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is common on athletic fields, commercial properties, pasture edges, and some residential lawns throughout Houston County. It is drought-tolerant, aggressive, and responds well to regular fertilization. Bermuda requires different fertilization timing and weed control chemistry than St. Augustine.

Centipede Grass

Centipede is a low-maintenance grass common in shaded East Texas lawns. It prefers acidic, low-fertility soil and is easily over-fertilised — high nitrogen applications cause iron chlorosis (yellowing) and decline. Our programmes for centipede lawns use lower-rate, iron-supplemented fertilization and targeted weed control appropriate for this sensitive grass.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia is increasingly used in newer Houston County residential developments for its density and drought tolerance. It responds well to targeted fertilization and aggressive weed management during establishment.

Our Lawn Programme — What’s Included

Soil Assessment: We assess soil condition and existing turf health at the initial visit — identifying nutrient deficiencies, pH imbalance, compaction, and weed species present.

Fertilization Schedule: Customised fertilization programme based on grass species and seasonal growth cycle. Typically 4–6 applications per year for East Texas growing conditions — spring through early fall for warm-season grasses.

Pre-Emergent Weed Control: Applied before weed seeds germinate — preventing crabgrass, sandbur, annual bluegrass, and other problem weeds from establishing. Timing is critical for effectiveness. We schedule applications based on soil temperature data for Houston County.

Post-Emergent Weed Control: Selective herbicide application that targets broadleaf weeds and problem grasses already growing in the lawn without damaging turf. Product selection is matched to your specific grass type.

Weed identification: We identify the weed species present and select appropriate control chemistry. A product effective on clover may not control nutgrass. Getting this right matters.

The Pest Control — Lawn Care Connection

At Critter Gitters, lawn care is integrated with pest management — not offered as a separate, unrelated service. A healthy lawn directly reduces pest pressure:

  • Dense turf suppresses fire ant mound establishment by reducing available bare soil for colony founding
  • Healthy grass reduces the weedy, low-lying vegetation that provides resting habitat for fleas and ticks
  • Proper fertilization eliminates the drought-stressed, thinning lawn sections that are most vulnerable to pest invasion
  • Weed control removes the broadleaf plants that harbour aphids, scale insects, and other secondary pests

Frequently Asked Questions — Lawn Care in East Texas

Q: When should I start fertilizing my lawn in East Texas?

A: Warm-season grasses in Houston County should be fertilised when soil temperatures reach 65°F — typically late March to early April. Fertilising too early before grass breaks dormancy wastes product and can encourage early weed growth.

Q: My St. Augustine grass is turning yellow. What is wrong?

A: Yellowing St. Augustine in East Texas is most commonly caused by iron deficiency (especially after heavy rain or on alkaline soils), chinch bug damage, or over-watering. We will assess the cause at your lawn evaluation and apply the appropriate correction.

Q: Can you treat my lawn for weeds without damaging my St. Augustine?

A: Yes. We use herbicide products specifically labelled safe for St. Augustine at the correct rates and timing. Applying the wrong product or wrong rate on St. Augustine causes significant damage — which is why professional application matters.

Q: How long after lawn treatment before my kids and pets can go back in the yard?

A: We advise a short re-entry window (typically 30–60 minutes once product has dried) for treated areas. We provide specific guidance at every service.
