I contacted Critter Gitters this morning to help me eradicate a huge wasp nest on the front of my house and around the eaves of my roof. They kindly came out a couple of hours later, killed all of the wasps, and sent me a picture of the nests. Now THAT’S service!!! Wouldn’t use anyone else!! Thanks Lane for your help and awesome service!

Joey Baker was highly recommended by the realtor who sold me my house. I saw what looked like termites, but Joey came right away and identified carpenter ants. I saved some dead ones in a zip lock bag for him to look at. He and his team treated the inside and outside of the house. It only took 2 treatments to get rid of the little critters. Don't do what I did. When they first started trailing out of the wall, I sprayed pesticide on them. Joey let me know to let them trail, otherwise they will go back in and make another colony.

Mice and rats aren’t just a nuisance — they’re a serious threat. Their teeth carry a hardness index of 5.5, harder than iron, copper, and aluminum. They chew through wires (fire hazard), destroy insulation, contaminate food, and spread disease. One pair can become a serious infestation in a matter of weeks.
Why East Texas Has Year-Round Rodent Pressure
Houston County’s agricultural landscape — pine forests, hay fields, river bottoms — creates a massive natural rodent population that’s always pushing toward structures. In Crockett and surrounding rural communities, this pressure is constant: mice and rats move from fields into homes in spring, nest in attics through summer, and seek warmth inside walls in fall. There’s no off-season.
The disease risk is real. The Centers for Disease Control on Hantavirus documents that mice infected with Hantavirus are present in Texas, and exposure comes from inhaling dust from dried rodent droppings during cleaning — not from being bitten. Rodents also carry fleas that introduce flea and tick infestations into your home as they move between indoor and outdoor environments.
Our blog post on rodent-proofing your East Texas home covers the most common entry points we find on Houston County properties — including ones most homeowners never think to check.
Trapping, Exclusion & Clean-Out: Our Full-Service Approach
We don’t just set traps. We find every entry point: gaps around pipes, deteriorated soffit vents, spaces where wiring enters the foundation, unsealed HVAC penetrations. We seal these with steel wool, hardware cloth, and professional-grade expanding foam — materials rodents can’t chew through.
Active trapping removes the current population. Exclusion prevents re-entry. Attic clean-out (when needed) removes contaminated insulation and nesting material before the pathogens in rodent waste create an ongoing health hazard inside your living space.
For properties with raccoons, squirrels, or opossums entering through the same gaps, we coordinate with our wildlife removal and exclusion service to address everything in one program. Shared entry points mean shared solutions.
Mice vs. Rats: Why It Matters for Treatment
House mice and roof rats are the most common species in Crockett homes. Mice are exploratory — they’ll investigate new objects, including traps, quickly. Rats are neophobic: they avoid new objects for days. Trap placement, bait selection, and timing strategies differ significantly between the two species.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension on rodent biology and control confirms that Norway rats — common in agricultural areas like Grapeland and the Crockett outskirts — burrow under slabs and foundations. Treating them requires exterior bait stations in addition to interior trapping.

FAQ’s
Common Questions from Our Customers
How do I know if I have mice or rats?
Mice leave small, dark droppings (like rice grains) and gnaw marks on soft materials like food packaging. Rats leave larger droppings and tend to gnaw on structural elements — wiring, joists, PVC pipe. Both are more active at night; hearing scratching in walls after dark is a reliable sign. Call us for a free inspection to confirm the species.
Can I just use snap traps from the hardware store?
Snap traps work on the mice you catch — they do nothing about the entry points, the nest, or the next wave of rodents moving in from outside. DIY trapping without exclusion is a treadmill. We stop the cycle by removing the current population AND sealing out future entry.
Is rodent bait (poison) safe to use indoors?
We use bait stations when appropriate — tamper-resistant containers that keep the bait away from children and pets. In homes with young children or curious pets, we default to mechanical traps inside and bait stations outside in protected locations. We’ll discuss the safest approach for your situation.

Do you clean up after rodents?
Yes. Attic clean-out and sanitization is available as a separate service. This is especially important when insulation has been contaminated — rodent droppings dry out and release airborne particles that carry pathogens. We remove contaminated material and can replace insulation through our referral network.
