If you’ve stepped outside in Grapeland lately, you’ve probably noticed them. That familiar high-pitched whine. The itchy welts the next morning. The constant swatting every time you try to enjoy your deck.
Mosquitoes are back. And this year, they showed up early.
April temperatures in East Texas have been warm and humid – exactly what mosquitoes need to breed fast and spread across properties. If you thought mosquito season didn’t start until June, think again. By the time summer hits, populations will be out of control if you’re not already treating.
Here’s what Grapeland homeowners need to know about protecting their properties from mosquitoes this spring and summer.
Why East Texas Gets Hit So Hard with Mosquitoes
East Texas isn’t just mosquito-friendly. It’s mosquito paradise.
We’ve got everything they need: warm temperatures, high humidity, wooded areas, standing water after every rain, and plenty of vegetation for them to rest in during the day.
Properties around Grapeland, Crockett, Palestine, and Kennard see heavy mosquito pressure from April straight through October. That’s six months of not being able to use your yard without getting swarmed.
Asian Tiger Mosquitoes
These are the aggressive daytime biters with black and white stripes. You’re mowing the lawn or working in the garden, and they attack relentlessly. They breed in small amounts of standing water – even a bottle cap full is enough.
Southern House Mosquitoes
Active at dawn and dusk. These are the ones that ruin your evening barbecue or morning coffee on the porch. They prefer larger bodies of standing water and rest in vegetation during the day.
Both species are all over Houston County. And both can carry diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and encephalitis.
The Real Health Risks (Beyond Just Itchy Bites)
Most people think mosquitoes are just annoying. And yeah, the bites are miserable. But mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals on the planet because of the diseases they spread.
West Nile Virus
The most common mosquito-borne illness in Texas. Most people don’t show symptoms, but about 1 in 5 develop fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In severe cases (especially elderly people), it causes neurological damage.
Texas sees hundreds of West Nile cases every year. Many of them right here in East Texas.
Zika Virus
Less common now than a few years ago, but still a risk. Especially dangerous for pregnant women because it causes severe birth defects.
Encephalitis
Inflammation of the brain caused by mosquito-borne viruses. Rare, but serious. Symptoms include high fever, confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, permanent neurological damage or death.
Heartworm in Pets
Mosquitoes transmit heartworm to dogs and cats. Without preventative medication from your vet, one bite from an infected mosquito can lead to serious heart and lung damage in your pets.
This isn’t just about being uncomfortable in your yard. It’s about protecting your family’s health.
Why DIY Mosquito Control Doesn’t Work
Walk into any big box store in April and you’ll see shelves full of mosquito solutions. Citronella candles. Bug zappers. Yard foggers. Personal repellent sprays.
Here’s the problem: none of them actually control mosquito populations.
Citronella Candles
They smell nice. They might create a small protected zone right around the candle. But mosquitoes just fly around it. And the second you move away from the candle, you’re getting bitten.
Bug Zappers
These kill moths and other insects attracted to light. Mosquitoes? Not so much. Studies show bug zappers kill very few mosquitoes and actually attract more insects to your yard.
Foggers and Sprays from the Store
You spray your yard, it kills some adult mosquitoes on contact, and you feel like you accomplished something. Then three days later, mosquitoes are back in full force.
Why? Because you didn’t treat the breeding sites. You didn’t create a residual barrier. And you didn’t interrupt the life cycle. You just killed the ones you could see at that moment.
Personal Repellents (DEET, Picaridin)
These work to keep mosquitoes off YOU. But they don’t reduce the population on your property. You’re just protecting yourself temporarily while the problem continues.
If you want to actually control mosquitoes around your Grapeland property, you need a different approach.

How Professional Mosquito Control Actually Works
At Critter Gitters, we use a two-part system we call Mosquito Duo Defense. It’s designed to hit mosquitoes from both angles – killing the adults AND stopping the next generation from hatching.
Part 1: Barrier Treatments
We apply a barrier treatment to all the areas where adult mosquitoes rest during the day:
- Vegetation around your property (bushes, shrubs, tall grass)
- Under decks and porches
- Around foundations and eaves
- Shaded areas near the house
- Tree trunks and foliage
This creates a protective zone around your property. When mosquitoes land on treated surfaces, they pick up the product and die. It keeps working for weeks between treatments.
Part 2: In2Care Breeding Site Control
This is where it gets interesting. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed – even tiny amounts. Puddles, bird baths, clogged gutters, low spots in the yard.
The In2Care system uses stations that attract mosquitoes looking for breeding sites. When they land on the station, they pick up a biological control agent. Then they fly to other breeding sites and contaminate them, stopping larvae from developing into biting adults.
They basically do our job for us. Pretty cool, actually.
Monthly Treatments from April Through October
Mosquito populations explode fast. One female can lay hundreds of eggs, and they go from egg to biting adult in about a week.
That’s why monthly treatments matter. We’re keeping constant pressure on the population – killing adults, stopping reproduction, and preventing new generations from taking over.
Some months are worse than others (July and August are brutal). We adjust our approach based on what we’re seeing at your property.
What to Expect After Mosquito Treatment
First 24-48 Hours
You’ll notice fewer mosquitoes almost immediately. The barrier treatment works fast – adult mosquitoes die when they contact treated surfaces.
You might still see some mosquitoes (especially if they’re flying in from neighboring properties), but activity drops significantly.
First Few Weeks
Mosquito populations continue to decline as breeding sites get contaminated and new adults fail to emerge. Most customers tell us they can finally use their deck or yard again.
Throughout the Season
With monthly treatments, populations stay suppressed. You’ll see mosquitoes occasionally (it’s East Texas – you can’t eliminate every single one), but nothing like the swarms you dealt with before.
The goal isn’t zero mosquitoes. The goal is making your property usable so your family can actually enjoy being outside.
Standing Water – The Biggest Problem
Even with professional treatment, standing water attracts mosquitoes and gives them breeding sites.
Walk your Grapeland property and look for:
- Clogged gutters holding water
- Flower pot saucers
- Old tires, buckets, or containers
- Bird baths that don’t get changed regularly
- Low spots in the yard that puddle after rain
- Kids’ toys left outside
- Tarps or covers that collect water
Empty or fix these. Change bird bath water twice a week. Drill holes in the bottom of trash cans and recycling bins so water drains.
We treat breeding sites during service, but if you’ve got standing water everywhere, mosquitoes will keep finding places to lay eggs.
Why Mosquito Pressure Is Higher in Some Areas
Not all properties around Grapeland and Houston County have the same mosquito problems.
Near Wooded Areas
Trees and brush create shaded, humid environments where mosquitoes thrive. If your property backs up to woods, expect heavier pressure.
Near Creeks or Low-Lying Areas
Natural water sources and areas that hold water after rain are mosquito magnets. We see this a lot around Grapeland and rural Kennard.
Properties with Lots of Vegetation
The more bushes, shrubs, and landscaping you have, the more resting areas for adult mosquitoes. Trimming back vegetation helps, but you’ll still need treatment.
Lake Properties
If you’re anywhere near water in Trinity County or around Lake Livingston, mosquitoes are relentless. Lake properties almost always need monthly treatment to be usable.
We adjust treatment coverage based on your property conditions. A small lot in town needs different treatment than five wooded acres.
Bundle and Save on Mosquito Control
Most of our customers in Houston County bundle mosquito service with their regular pest control plan.
Add Mosquito Duo Defense to your Essential, Premium, or Elite pest control plan and save 10% on both services.
Makes sense to bundle – we’re already coming out quarterly for pest control, so adding monthly mosquito service during the season is easy and saves you money.
New customers get $50 off the initial mosquito treatment. That covers the setup, In2Care station placement, and first barrier application.
When to Start Mosquito Treatment
Right now. Seriously.
We’re already in late April. Mosquitoes are breeding. Populations are building. If you wait until June when they’re unbearable, you’re playing catch-up all summer.
Starting treatment now (late April or early May) keeps populations from exploding. You get ahead of the problem instead of reacting to it.
Most Grapeland customers run service from May through September – the absolute worst months. Some years mosquitoes show up in April. Some years they hang around into October. We work with you on scheduling based on actual conditions.
What About One-Time Treatments for Events?
Yeah, we can do that. If you’re having a graduation party, wedding, or outdoor event and need mosquitoes knocked down for the weekend, we can treat a day or two before.
It’ll give you relief for your event. Just know that it’s temporary – within a week or two, populations bounce back unless you’re on a regular program.
Most people who do a one-time treatment end up calling back a month later asking for ongoing service because they realize how much better their property is with regular treatment.
Get Your Grapeland Property Back
Mosquitoes shouldn’t dictate whether you can use your own yard.
